I haven’t really talked about nail products on my blog, however trust me when I say that they definitely are an integral part of my weekly routine. Lately, I’ve been trying really hard to keep my nails looking their best, so when Bio Seaweed Gel reached out to me asking if I wanted to try out some of their products, I was more than happy to do so. They sent me some polishes from their BEYOND Nail Lacquer line as well as a gel polish from their UNITY All-In-One Gel Polish line. This was my first time using a gel polish, so I was extremely excited to see how well they work. If you would like to learn about my thoughts on the Bio Seaweed Gel polishes, please keep reading.
Bio Seaweed Gel produces a healthier alternative to traditional gel polishes. Here is their brand description from their website:
We are the only big-5 free professional gel brand today. All our products are big-5 free with no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, BHA or solvents. This means there is zero dehydration, staining or weakening of the natural nails.
They have several different varieties of gel polishes along with a line of regular polishes called BEYOND Nail Lacquers. As I mentioned previously, I was sent a few of their products to try out: 3 from the BEYOND Nail Lacquer line along with the accompanying top and base coats, 1 gel polish from the UNITY All-In-One line, a mini LED/UV U-light, and some nail files. The BEYOND Nail Lacquers usually retail for about $12 CAD while the UNITY All-In-One gel polishes retail for $18 CAD, however there are currently some promotions going on right now for most of their products. I also noticed that they usually have other promotions throughout the year so it is likely these products can be bought at a discounted price fairly regularly.
UNITY All-In-One Gel Polish
This product was the one I was most curious about, given that I’ve never tried a gel polish before. It is given this description on the Bio Seaweed Gel website:
UNITY All-In-One Colour Gel Polish has base, colour, top and nail strengthener all-in-one bottle. This unique formula combines 4 products into one bottle. UNITY cures to the touch with no sticky residue, so there is no need to wipe with alcohol to remove sticky inhibition layer.
UNITY is the first and only true colour gel polish that can be cured to the touch in direct sunlight. This advanced SolarCure technology means that even if you do not own a UV or LED light, you can still get all the amazing benefits of a gel polish with just a bottle of UNITY and the SUN! BSG No-Wipe Top Gel Polish also cures to the touch in direct sunlight. Use together for a longer-lasting gel wear with no lamps needed.
Since I was given a lamp to cure the polish, I did not bother to test the claims on this product curing with sunlight. Besides, proper daylight is a rare commodity these days in the Great White North.
I picked the shade ‘Iqaluit’, which is described as a “soft mauve”. I thought the shade was really pretty, however on my skin tone it was more of a brighter pink. The application of the polish was relatively easy; I added one thin coat of the polish, which was very opaque and smooth upon initial application. I cleaned up any polish that got onto the surrounding skin prior to curing the polish with the lamp. The lamp itself was very easy to use. It comes with two settings, one for 30 seconds and one for 60 seconds. One thing I will note is that since the lamp is quite small, I did have to cure my nails a few fingers at a time so that the UV light would be able to hit each nail. However, this is just a minor complaint. I added a second coat and cured the polish once again for another minute, and I was done! The polish was completely dry and had a beautiful shine to it. I’d say the whole process took me about 10 minutes, which is really handy for those instances where you need your nails done in a pinch.
It is my understanding that gel polishes are supposed to last slightly longer than traditional nail polishes. Unfortunately, this polish didn’t last an entire week without chipping slightly. With that said, I didn’t use a base or top coat to help the polish last longer, which is practically necessary for my nails. In addition, I’m very rough with my nails so it’s really no surprise that my manicure didn’t last.
The removal process was one that I was slightly dreading. I always held the bias that gel polishes would be a nightmare to take off, however I’m happy to say that I no longer have any reservations thanks to my experiences with the UNITY All-In-One polishes. I simply soaked some cotton balls in 100% acetone, placed one on each finger tip, wrapped the fingers in foil, and the polish came right off in less than 5 minutes. I also put some oil on my cuticles to keep them from drying out too much.
Overall, I thought that the UNITY All-In-One gel polish was very easy to use. The formula is very creamy and opaque, it requires little effort for it to look professionally done, and I love the high shine, smooth finish. I also appreciate that it doesn’t take much time to apply and cure, and that it can be removed fairly easily. I do wish it lasted a little longer on my nails, however this critique should be taken with a grain of salt given that I did not use a base or top coat, and I am quite rough with my nails.
BEYOND Nail Lacquer
I received 3 shades in the BEYOND Nail Lacquer line along with the accompanying base and top coat. These are regular nail polishes that do not require curing with a UV lamp, however these also do not contain formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, BHA or solvents. I picked the shades ‘Rose Gold’ which is a “pink-mocha”, ‘Lily’ which is a “peachy-orange nude”, and ‘Coconut’ which is a “creamy nude”. Rose Gold and Lily were quite opaque with just one layer of polish, however I found Coconut to be a little streaky. Having said that, I find that to be the case with most light shades across many different nail polish brands. I didn’t find that the accompanying base or top coat prolonged the wear of the polish. My nails started chipping after 3-4 days, however I didn’t expect them to perform miraculously. My nails are very finicky and most brands of base and top coats I’ve tried do not make a difference in terms of keeping my nails chip-free for more than few days.
In my opinion, these polishes are on par with the more popular nail polish brands I’ve tried. The colours are beautiful, especially Rose Gold, and they go on quite opaque (except for the lightest shade). I like the brush that the polishes come with – I think it really helps distribute the polish evenly on the nail.
I am quite pleased with the products I received from Bio Seaweed Gel. The UNITY All-In-One gel polish was one that I’m so happy to have tried because it has given me a really good first impression on gel polishes. I’m going to try to find some base and top coats that might help prolong the wear of the polish, but other than that I think it’s a great option for individuals who don’t have the patience for nail polish to dry. As for the BEYOND Nail Lacquers, the base and top coats were a little lackluster, however I am very happy with the shades I picked. Rose Gold has definitely become one of my favourite shades, and using my own tried and true combo of base and top coats, these polishes lasted much longer without chipping on my nails.
The BEYOND Nail Lacquers have a great selection of shades so they’re definitely worth checking out. I also think that these polishes are comparable to more popular nail polish brands. I would even go as far as to say that I prefer these ones over some in particular, therefore if you’re looking for polishes that don’t use any of the Big-5 ingredients without compromising quality, the BEYOND Nail Lacquer line is a wonderful option. I do hope that the UNITY All-In-One line expands to include some more opaque, dark shades. When they do, I’ll definitely be getting some other ones.
A huge “thank you” to Bio Seaweed Gel for giving me the opportunity to try out some products!
