Happy New Year everybody! I hope you all had some wonderful celebrations this past weekend. Just like many other people around the world, I decided that now is a better time than ever to get myself started on something I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time: finish some old products. I got way too caught up in trying out so many different things over the years, which I don’t entirely regret doing, however doing so made me lose sight of what my original wants and needs were when I first decided to build up my collection. I actually want to enjoy the stuff that I have, and in order to do that, I need to make an effort to use them on a regular basis.
So how am I going to do this? Enter: Project Pan. Project Pan is essentially a project to use up products in my makeup collection. The goal of my specific project is to “pan” (i.e. to literally see the bottom of the pan or finish up) 17 products by the end of 2017. It also helps to track progress in order to stay motivated. If a product is finished before the end of the year, it is replaced with another product from my collection which I would like to use up.
Sounds simple enough, right? For me, it will definitely be a challenge because I need variety in my routine, otherwise I’ll go crazy. I’m going to try very hard to use the products I’ve chosen to pan, however if I’m really bored, I’m not going to deny myself of using another product. My makeup, after all, is supposed to make me feel happy. There’s no point in making this a miserable journey – I just want the satisfaction of actually using things up and knowing that I got my money’s worth.
If you’d like to learn more about the 17 products I’ll be panning in 2017, please keep reading.
Kat Von D Ladybird Palette
This is the first palette I ever bought, which was a little over 3 years ago. I don’t think I’m going to use up the entire thing, but I definitely want to hit pan on every single shade before the end of 2017. I was always hesitant to use these shadows because this palette has since been discontinued and it also has a lot of sentimental value. But these shadows are quite old, so they really do need to go. I’ve already hit pan on one shade (finally!), and I suspect it won’t be too difficult to get a couple other shades within the next month or so. It’s a great neutral palette for every day, but because I rarely ever wear eye shadow, this will probably be one of the hardest things to pan.
MAC Eyeshadow in “All That Glitters”
This is also another shadow I’ve had for about 3 years. It’s a beautiful champagne shade that works wonderfully as a lid shade, brow bone highlight, and inner corner highlight. It already has a visible dent in it, so I think I can definitely hit pan on this within a month. I would like to have it completely used up by the end of 2017. If so, it would be the first eyeshadow I’ve ever finished!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown
I’ve had this pomade for about 3 years, and I’m seriously so ready to be finished with it. Unfortunately, it seems like a never ending pot of product. I probably have about a third of it left, but I don’t know if it will actually last until the end of 2017. I’ve revived this pomade several times with oil or saline solution; I’m not sure how long it’s going to keep. I’ve been using this product liberally in order to use it up faster, so hopefully it will be gone in 3 or 4 months.
Benefit Erase Paste
I don’t mind this product at all, however these days I just have no need to colour correct my under eye area. I also can only use this product during the winter months because it is far too light on me when I have a tan. I don’t think it’s realistic for me to finish this product up by the end of 2017, but I think I can definitely hit pan on this before summer rolls around.
Urban Decay Naked Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in Medium Neutral + NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard
These two concealers are absolutely wonderful. I use them every single day, however my goal for these is to use them up faster. It takes me a ridiculous amount of time to actually use up a whole tube of concealer because I don’t really use much product to begin with. So my goal for these two is to finish them up before summer begins and to use them very liberally.
Marc Jacobs Twinkle Pop Stick Eyeshadow in Three Shakes
This is a lovely chocolatey brown cream shadow that is very sparkly. I have quite a bit of product left, but I feel like if I use this as a liner or as a base shadow on days when I can wear a darker eye look, I can use it up fairly quickly. I want to have this finished in the next 3 or 4 months.
Smashbox Photofinish Pore Minimizing Primer
I’ve had this travel size for such a long time – about 2 years. I’m only half way through it, but I think if I wear foundation every single day, I can plow through this within a couple of months. It just sucks that I can only use this primer on certain parts of my face. If it wasn’t for that, this would have been finished a long time ago.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 6.5
I absolutely adore this foundation. I’ve had it for almost 2 years now, but I haven’t even used a quarter of it! Even though it’s not something I’m used to, I’m going to try to wear this every single day. Because this shade is too dark for me at the moment, I’m going to have to mix it in with a lighter foundation, but regardless I think I can get away with finishing this bottle before the end of the year. For $66 a bottle, I better use it all up before it goes bad.
MAC Prep + Prime Colour Corrector in Peach Lustre
Although this product may not have much left in it, it’s going to be a bit difficult to finish up. Just like my under eyes, I’m not really huge on colour correcting the rest of my face much these days. But now that I’ll be using foundation regularly, I think I can use this to neutralize a few dark areas. I’m hoping to finish this within 2 or 3 months.
MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Give Me Sun!
I’ve already been using this bronzer daily for a month and I’ve hardly made a dent in it. It looks practically brand new! Because of this, and because I have a ton of other bronzers I’d like to use, I’m only going to try to hit pan on it. It’s not realistic for me to think that I can completely pan this within a year, especially knowing my track record with bronzers. I think it will take me at least 5 or 6 months before I see any pan, but I’m going to try really hard to use this liberally.
The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer
I mainly use this product for contouring, which I rarely ever do these days. I can’t see myself using up this entire pan within a year, but I’m certainly planning on hitting a sizeable pan on this.
NARS Blush in Orgasm
I’ve had this blush for almost 3 years, and it is one of my all-time favourites. I’ve already begun using this daily for the past month and I’ve noticed a bit of a dip in it. I’m going to see how far I can get in 5 or 6 months. I think I can definitely hit pan on this before the end of the year, but if I see that I am making good progress half-way through the year, I’m going to attempt to finish up the entire blush by the end of 2017.
Benefit Watt’s Up! Highlighter
This is probably the oldest item in this project. I received this deluxe sample as a part of a birthday present from Sephora many years ago, and it barely shows any usage. I’m honestly surprised that it hasn’t gone bad considering it has a cream formulation, but I’m going to keep using it as a highlight until it is gone. I think it will take me 3-4 months.
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal
I highly doubt I’ll be able to finish this entire thing up by the end of the year because of how intense it is, but I think I can definitely hit pan on it within a few months. I love this highlighter so much – I really want to show it some more love!
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina + Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita
I bought Patina about 2 years ago, along with Lolita shortly after. Liquid lipsticks are notorious for going bad quickly, so I want to finish these guys up as soon as possible. I don’t think there’s much left of Lolita, but it’s so difficult to tell with its packaging. I think I can finish both of these within 4 months of daily (of course alternating) use. I just have to remember to apply them more than once in a day, which is something I never do. Luckily they’re both very work-appropriate shades so it won’t be a problem if I only wear these shades.
BONUS: MAC Strobe Cream
This is probably a year and a half old. I want to finish it while it is still cold outside because winter is the only time I can get away with using this product since it can get pretty greasy. Because it’s a travel size, I think I can finish it up by spring.
I’ll be posting quarterly updates on my progress with these items, so please stay tuned! Also, let me know in the comments below if you’ve ever done a “project pan” yourself, or if you have any specific items you want to use up within the next year.
